Beadnall.
Knackers Hole. Park car, kit up and walk a few metres to the sea, ideal for novices, life to see include crabs, wrass, sometimes octopus. Thanks to Sharon.
Howick.
Doctors House.O.S. Sheet 81. Grid ref 264175. Approx. one and a half miles south of Craster a farm track drops down to the sea when the coast road turns inland, park on the verge or in the small layby just to the north. Please do not drive down or park across the track. There are four reefs running parallel to the shore each with a west facing wall. Maximum depth around 9 metres. Rumbling kern.O.S. Sheet 81. Grid ref 264176. As above but turn right in front of doctors house pass through two gates and drop down on to a small beach, snorkel out to the largest reef and follow it north to exit near a gully to the south of doctors house. Whitley Bay.
St. Marys Island. A small island to the north of Whitley bay with a light house and causeway running from the mainland where there is a pay and display car park. The area is a voluntary marine reserve. To dive kit up in the car park and walk across the causeway ( covered at high water, take care not to step off sides ). To dive the northeast side and the wreck of the Janet Clark keep to the right of the island and move around the rocks until just left of a large concrete pillar. The area has a group of small reefs and gullies with the wreck lying about 50m out, bow's on to the island in line with the two middle chimneys on the main light house building. The Janet Clark, a small steamer is well scattered but worth a look. To the northwest of the island are more reefs and gullies, these can be reached by turning left from the causeway and following the rocks around to deeper water. Max depth is approx 9m and is best dived after westerly winds. Air and more information in available from the Deep Blue Dive Centre in Tynemouth.
Browns Bay, Cullercoats. A small bay north of Cullercoats harbour which is home to the wrecks of the Butetown, the Zephyros and The Astley. Car parking is on the road side above the bay with steps leading down to a small sea water swimming pool. The depth is about 7m and air can found at Deep Blue www.deepbluedive.com which is only 10 minutes away.
South Shields.
Fisherman's bay. A small cove about one and a half miles down the coast from south shields, park in a layby on the coast road and the bay is about 500 metres across grass. A shallow dive to around 7 metres, best dived with winds from the west for best vis.
Flamborough Head.
Little Thornwick Bay. Car park at top of cliffs with steep steps into a small bay. The site is best dived at high water, when small caves and boulder outcrops can be explored. Depth around 8 metres.
Capernwray.
Over Kellet, Lancashire. An inland site with dive shop air. etc. A large amount of ' Toys ' have been placed in a quarry for our entertainment. A dive permit must be obtained before diving and a fee of £5.00 per day is charged. For more info, opening times etc. link to www.dive-site.co.uk
Kirby Lonsdale.
Devil's Bridge, Kirby Lonsdale, Cumbria. A river dive site near Capernwray, the bridge is a popular biker's meet just off the A65 on the outskirts of Kirby Lonsdale. The bridge is closed to traffic so the best access is from the north west side of the river where there is parking and toilets, over the bridge is a snack van selling tea and butties etc. The river is a salmon fishing area so is best dived out of the fishing season, also large dive knifes are frowned upon. Enter the water downstream of the bridge and fin against the current keeping close to the bottom, under the bridge the river narrows into a rocky gorge. Don't dive when the river is in flood and watch out for people jumping from the bridge !!!!!!!! Trout and salmon can be seen. The depth is around 6m and air can be found at Capernwary. Catterick.
Ellerton Park Lake. Ellerton Nr Catterick, North Yorkshire. A lake dive about 3 miles from the A1at Cattrick. Toilets, changing rooms and showers are next to a car park and the lake. A fee of £ 3.50 per day is charged for diving. Max depth is around 10m with training platforms at 6m, ropes on the bottom link the platforms, a car and van.
